Business Analysis Lessons Learned

I’ve recently been reflecting on my 20 years as a BA and thought about the key lessons I’ve learned... want to hear them?
I’ve been doing business analysis for over two decades now.
Started back in Belarus when the job mostly meant “write down the requirements". Today I’m in Dallas, helping Fortune 500 clients, doing everything from UX research to product strategy.
But deep down, I’m still just a BA. That’s who I am.
Here’s what 20 years in the business analysis taught me, and here are my lessons learned:
🔹 BA doesn’t have to be a stepping stone. It can be the career.
🔹 You need to specialize. Generalists don’t cut it anymore. You need that extra edge – a domain, a tool, a platform.
🔹 Emotional intelligence is a must. You’re dealing with people, not just systems.
🔹 Earn the right to give advice. Trust first, then talk.
The role’s changed a lot. So have I.
